Why celebrate the marriage of Machine and Nature?

Water is Nature's most elemental force. It is the liquid of life, the bulk of our bodies. It falls on us, shapes our world, sustains life and, in its own time, returns everything to the sea to renew the endless cycle of re-birth. Water beckons us to watch, to listen, to touch, to feel, to taste.

Machines, on the other hand, are born of the mind of Man. Ore sheltered in the ground deep beneath us is bathed in unimaginable heat, becoming the steel with which we multiply the forces of Nature, transforming Nature's elements into objects and actions conceived by human creativity. In so doing, Machines transform us as well--we no longer simply participate in Nature, we act upon it. As we are Nature's offspring, so too are machines our own children, dynamic, fantastic constructions which hum, whir, roar with energy.

Nature and Machine are not, as some would believe, opposite and incompatible forces. They are a vibrant, intertwined whole. Together, they form a glorious expression of the unity of unfathomably ancient Nature with the Machine, recent progeny of Nature's gift to us, our singularly creative intelligence. The Machine is not an affront to Nature--it is our homage, the tribute we pay it.
